Hello again!

Ok. Back to potty training!

Today I’m going to talk about something that’s incredibly important. I talk about this in the book, and the more you hear it, the better.

When it comes to potty training, punishment is NOT allowed. There can be no negativity, harsh words, yelling, or degradation surrounding potty training. This will make your child fearful of the whole potty training process, and it will prolong the process indefinitely.

And, you will regret punishing your child forever.

If you catch you child when s/he’s ready to potty train (by paying attention to the signs of readiness), s/he will be cooperative and will eagerly try to please you. She will be excited that she is becoming a big kid. She will try hard to make it to the potty, but be prepared for accidents. They will happen.  No big deal.

When she has an accident, handle it with grace and calm. Tell her that she’s a big kid and has to t-t on the potty like other big kids. If you notice the accident happening, pick her up quickly and take her to the potty, saying, “We t-t on the potty, t-t on the potty.”

Don’t scare her or scold her. She won’t have accidents forever, but they will happen, especially in the beginning.

Again, no punishment, harshness, negativity. Only happy, positive, encouraging!

“Affirming words from moms and dads are like light switches. Speak a word of affirmation at the right moment in a child’s life and it’s like lighting up a whole roomful of possibilities.”
- Gary Smalley
